In China, residents are beginning to pay the price for unchecked emissions.  An index that measures unsafe particulate matter in the air has hit 755 in Beijing. To put that in perspective, the World Health Organization suggests that we be exposed to no more than a 20 on the same scale.

InsideClimate News recently published an article showing both nations’ intention of building additional coal plants rather than investing in cleaner (and therefore safer) sources of energy. America has 36 new plants planned and China has ten times that many slated to be built. China at least set themselves the meager goal of having 15% of their energy clean by 2020- no such pledge from the States.

Only 5% of America’s electricity comes from renewable sources compared to the 42% we get from burning coal and China’s ratio is even worse.
